Matt Margett ‘in Another Cover Shot

Chris (O’conell) and I were in Laax for the euro open (Which is now after 5 years, RIP’ing).  When the comp was over we packed our gear into this tiny little hatchback and got a ride to the train station from one of chris’ girlfriends.  We accidentally got off at a wrong stop so we waved down a cab to take us to the right station.  I thought this cabbie was taking us into the mountains to “off us”…freaky dude.  When we finally got to Wegen, we realized were staying in the nicest, ritziest, most sophisticated hotel in the entire village (way beyond your average Motel 6).  But before I could fully enjoy my luxury pad, I learned I had to room with Chunk (Charlie Grinell of Poorboyz) who has the worst smelling feet and snores louder than my dad.

First day skiing was super sick, epic weather, breath taking resort. but the snow was super bad.  Europe in general had a crap season this year and it hadn’t snowed in weeks.  But just like the snow, we were doing what we could to make the most of it. If we weren’t going to be entertained by killer conditions, at least we had Chunk w/ us to keep us smiling.  As we were traversing across this face to get to another bowl to see what was up. Chunk hooked an edge and rolled all the way to the valley bottom. Dip Shit. But sometimes, w/ one man’s clumsiness comes the spoils. literally.  Spoiled snow.  We found a spot to build a jump but the corn snow wouldn’t hold and when we finally tried to hit it, we all just blasted through the jump. not good.

We bailed on the shoot and finished our fall to the valley to enjoy another amazing tourist day.  We had a guide who took us to the top of europe, the highest point called the JungFrau.  We took a train from the valley bottom that went all the way to the top of the ski resort then another train that went through the Iger to the top of europe.  Inside the glacier they have an ice palace where we played curling. (or for true red blooded Canadians who know how to speak – “we curled a game”) and I drank from the scotch bar, but don’t tell anyone.  We decided that we werent going to get anything accomplished here so we headed back to Laax to hit some park. we we’re supposed to be skiing.

Looking for some way to get productive, I talked to Andri Ambuhl who invited us to come shoot sunrise on his jump at his invitational contest.  So that night instead of going to bed early we decided to pull an all nighter at Riders Palace.  Chunk chugged a full blender of booze at the bar then puked his guts out all night.  Unfortunately the sunrise shoot never happened due to weather (or maybe booze, you’ll never know which) but to be honest, I dont think we were capable of skiing at that point anyways.

The next afternoon I got to session Andri’s perfect jump practically by myself (with sled laps to boot).  It was one of the most unbelievable jumping days I have ever had.  Ahhh, productivity at last. showing sponsors why they pay my bills.  And there you have it, that was pretty much my Orage euro trip.  I had so much fun with those guys.  Thanks for sending me out there for that.
